Message Outline
Psalm 46:7-11 (NIV)
7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46:9 (MSG)
“Step out of the traffic! Take a long,
loving look at me, your God.

St. Bonaventure, a 13th-century Franciscan theologian, profoundly shaped Christian spirituality by blending intellect and devotion. He taught that “man has three eyes by which he knows God and the things of God: the eye of flesh, the eye of reason, and the eye of contemplation.” The eye of the flesh perceives the physical world through the senses, the eye of reason seeks truth through study and reflection, and the eye of contemplation,also called the eye of the heart, perceives God through love and prayer. For Bonaventure, true knowledge of God comes when all three eyes are open, uniting understanding with a heart transformed by divine love.

“All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.” -Luke 4:28–30 (NIV)
“He recognized with authentic realism that anyone who permits another to determine the quality of his inner life gives into the hands of the other the keys to his destiny.”-Howard Thurman, Jesus and the Disinherited
